In the First Plane of Development (ages 0-6), children have a unique ability to absorb knowledge quickly and effortlessly. Maria Montessori referred to this as the “Absorbent Mind”. The child’s main goal during this plane of development is adaptation – becoming a person of your space and time. This is also the critical plane where the child’s personality forms. This is the basis of who the child will be for the rest of their life!
Children in this plane explore and learn through their senses. The Toddlers and 3-6 YEAR old classrooms are designed around this understanding. Movement and language activities fill the day, This concrete experience of learning by doing is essential to the child’s development and for their understanding of new concepts.
The child at this period in their life has a natural passion to engage in activity that they feel is meaningful and purposeful. They seek active participation within their community, both at home and at school. They are joyful learners with a unique ability to absorb knowledge quickly and effortlessly.
